These sparks were too powerful to be contained and were carried by Agni, the fire god, to the Ganges River. The six Krittikas (the wives of the Saptarishi, the seven sages) found the sparks floating on the river and nurtured them. As a result, Karttikeya was born with six heads, symbolizing his omniscient nature and the ability to protect the six directions.
